  • How to avoid last minute Christmas stress

There is always a lot to do in the last few days running up to Christmas and it can feel like you can't get through things. Tensions can run high in a family household. But remember you can and you will have a smooth Christmas if you take back control. You can follow my hypnotherapy style techniques.

    3 tips to keep Christmas running smoothly;

    1. Run events of the next 2 days through in your mind with everyone getting along fine, everything wrapped and opened, food cooked perfectly.... Imagine it is the end of Boxing day, you are getting into bed having had a great time with everything having gone well. What your mind sees your mind delivers, this technique will help you get the positive outcome you are looking for.
    2. Smile your way through the next 2 days as smiling creates positive brain chemicals which stops you from slipping into stressed feelings. You will enjoy Christmas more if you smile more.
    3. Tell yourself 'You can and you will and you are organised, on time, getting everything done easily and efficiently' By firmly self-talking yourself into the positive you will find your mind can't slip into Christmas drama mode and you will enjoy a perfect 2 days.

Try to enjoy the festive season.

  • Use your skills in life

Your skills are the most valuable asset you have

Most people will earn their money from their unique set of skills. Look at what your skills are with people or with work then embrace them, build upon them and use them wisely. If you are feeling stuck or want change in your life, be patient. Plan well. Build upon who you are already. Work hard. Be polite. Be kind. Create a worthwhile route forward for yourself but don't underestimate the skills you already have. Also, remember every experience good or bad will have built some skills which you can draw upon throughout your life.

When I became a hypnotherapist I didn't just stop doing my previous job. I earnt money from my existing career whilst I built my new hypnotherapy business. It took several years before I was earning full-time money from hypnotherapy and my writing work. Keep very focused and be sensible. Rome was not built in a day!

  • 3 ways to stop feeling lonely

3 techniques to help you to stop feeling lonely

Are you feeling lonely even though people are around you? Or are you actually on your own too much of the time?

Studies have shown that we do need the company of others in social interaction to live a long and healthy life. Just speaking to the person in the local shop can make a difference. But on the other hand, people can feel alone in a busy life when they feel others don't understand them or give them the space they require.

To get yourself into new positive thinking make your phrase of the month "I am happy with my own company and relaxed in the company of others".

Here are 3 tips to help:

    1) This is who I am -  Simply accept this is who you are and this is how you feel. By accepting your feelings you can then focus to rectify them. Know you have the ability to steer your life in the direction you want it to go by making new choices to change the issues which you are facing. "It is okay to feel how I do. I can change things for the better."

    2) Imagine you are surrounded by people - Feel the feeling of being surrounded by people who care about you. Visualise a positive interaction with other people. If you have people around who are too overwhelming then see them reduced down in size so they feel more manageable. Imagine laughing with people and you can also smile to lift your mood which will help.

    3) Plan ahead - Work out when the lonely times occur in your week then plan ahead to avoid these by make arrangements to fill these times. Be proactive by arranging to meet with friends, family, social or hobby groups to fill your diary up with like-minded people. Enjoy your time alone by doing the things you like such as cooking your favourite food and watching a movie you want to see. Get out of your home each day to be around people in the shops, parks and cafes. Relax into life as you realise this is a phase of your life, enjoy this time as much as you can. If your life is too busy, meaning you need more time alone, have the confidence to create time for yourself. It is all about getting everything into balance.

  • 3 Ways to Stop Worrying

Become aware of your worries so you can let them go

Are your words fuelling your anxiety? Is your automatic response to look for the drama or worry about things that do or don't exist?

To get yourself into new positive thinking make your phrase of the month "I am ready to find the positive in everything".

Here are 3 tips to help:

    1) This is where I am - Simply accept this is where you are in life right now. Accept whatever has happened or is happening, hold your hands up and surrender to where you are in life. Then write down what is worrying you, or what you would like to change, so you can begin to make a plan of action to do things differently to enhance your life moving forward. By holding 'where you are' in your hands and accepting it exists you can begin to let go of the battles in your mind.

    2) Be aware of what you are saying - Start to notice the conversations you have with yourself or other people. What topics are you discussing, are they negative and fuelling your stress, are they making you anxious? Try to focus on more positive things happening around you and turn your internal conversations with yourself into reassuring sentences such as "I can live a really comfortable life. I can feel comfortable in my life. I can create a happy life. I can be safe. I am safe and everything is fine."

    3) Remind yourself when things worked out well - Everyone faces challenges in their everyday life, some more difficult than others but, by focussing your mind on previous times you overcame things it will remind you that life has a way of working out well. You can and you will get through whatever is going on right now.

You can read more about how to let go of worries in my book Cut the Crap and Feel Amazing (published by Hay House). Or try my Stop Worrying hypnosis download.

  • How to let go of worries

Techniques for letting go of your worries

More people are worried about everyday life and the events happening in the news. We are more connected than ever before through every type of technology device which means we hear about other peoples worries and problems more too. In the past, if a friend or relative had a drama you may never have known about it or by the time you heard about it the incident would have resolved. But more people share a running commentary about the worries and problems in their daily life than ever before. Taking on board the stress of other people can cause you extra anxiety which can lead to over worrying. But how do you stop your mind from spiraling?

A worry is usually a lot of small worries, let's say like this bunch of balloons. Imagine each balloon represent a small worry. Lots of small worries added together can create an overwhelming anxiety. But if you break down the worries into small things you will find each small worry is manageable. I suggest you try to identify the small things that are creating the bigger worry. When you release the smaller things the bigger worry will eventually automatically release. Typical worries can be not sleeping properly, worrying about the future, worrying about a friend or relative, worrying about being too busy or too lonely, worrying about money today or your pension in the future, or debt such as credit cards or how you will pay off your mortgage.

    Exercise

Imagine in your mind the bunch of balloons. Each balloon represents one of your worries. Then imagine letting go of each balloon one by one as you imagine letting go of your problems such as the sleep issues, money problems, family stress, work pressures or whatever is going on in your life. Practice releasing the balloons in your mind but also work on cutting the things out of your life which causes the worries. You can imagine the balloons floating up in the air any time you feel yourself worrying. Over time your mind will get into the habits of moving problems on by rather than being overloaded by them.

You can read more about my hypnotherapy methods for reducing stress and worries in my book Cut the Crap and Feel Amazing (published by Hay House).

  • 3 solutions for coping with social anxiety

Solutions to help you cope with anxiety in social situations

I think everybody at some point has felt slightly anxious or awkward going into a situation. Nowadays it's becoming more common with more people suffering from it.

Three things I would say to help you:

    1. Change your state of mind.  The feeling is in your body because your mind has created it. So by changing your mindset, you will feel better in your body. So for this, you could imagine someone who is really confident - perhaps Simon Cowell who is really over the top. Imagine stepping into their body, imagine how it would feel, their posture, being relaxed. Then bring that feeling into your body.  Imagine yourself having that comfortable feeling. You can practice this anytime or place.
    2. Learn to reassure yourself.  Remember you are not alone - someone confident can be feeling nervous too. This feeling is something that you have learned to do from the fear of the unknown. If you do feel any anxiety coming on, reassure yourself by saying "I am fine.  I am going to be ok. This is fine. This is ok, I am doing really well. This is really really fine. I am going to be ok". Consciously relax your body.
    3. Before and after the event.  To help you feel comfortable about going to an event, see in your mind events going well, speaking to people, having plenty to say, and laughing.  It's always good to ask someone a question to get a conversation going. Imagine it is after the event, you are on your way out of that event, leaving and coming home and imagine it has gone really well, and you are really relaxed, you are smiling.

Something you can do when you are in social settings so that other people don't feel anxious is always invite people into your group if you are standing and chatting.  If you see someone there just make way for them to join in as well because if you do that for someone else, someone one day will do that for you.

You can read more about my hypnotherapy methods for reducing social anxiety in my book Cut the Crap and Feel Amazing (published by Hay House).

  • 5 facts you need to know to release stress

Releasing stress - what you need to know

The following 5 things cause stress
Once you know this, it will be easy to release the things causing you stress

    1)  Feeling overloaded - you may identify with running in your life, chasing your tail, an overload of technology, over-stimulated brain, work and family pressures, a tired mind which is secretly causing mental health issues. You need to address your lifestyle and start to create different ways of achieving things in a relaxed way. You need to learn to say no to things. Listen to yourself and start putting yourself first.

Tip - Write down the hotspots of stress in your week so you can make new plans to avoid these next week. Then restructure the plans in your diary but be prepared to say 'No' to things.

    2) Being tired - people are tired because they are just doing too much.  Children are getting caught up in the fast pace which makes them tired too.  You are creating your crazy life so it's you that needs to slow your life down, not speed it up.

Tip -  Visualise last week being very calm with everything done easily. Now visualise next week going smoothly, see yourself with extra time for yourself. Say to yourself 'AMAZING' even when it's going wrong you need to learn to find the AMAZING within it. By being persistent in saying 'AMAZING' no matter what is going on, you will begin to see the AMAZING in your life.  As your life runs smoothly you will be less tired.

    3)  Feeling anxious - expectations are so high from employers, earning less doing more, job security is uncertain. Children are tested constantly and each year exam boards say the exams were too easy so they raise the bar pushing teenagers to work even harder. The teens I see are burnt out before they have even begun their adult life. Competitive parents get paranoid their kids need to do more, when in fact they need to do less. Notice conversations of 'Will I keep my job?  Will I get into the university I want? Will I catch my train? Where is my life going?....I teach hypnosis techniques to take control of your anxious feelings.

Tip -  Change your language from what if it goes wrong to 'what if it's amazing. What if it works out ok.' In your mind imagine putting your anxieties on to clouds in the sky and let them float on by. Rub your tummy area with the palm of your hand in a circular motion to calm any past churned tummy feelings as you see the clouds floating past. Your mind listens to your thoughts so a positive conversation will help create more positive feelings. Seeing your worries floating away will break the habit of worrying.

    4) Feeling down - an epidemic of feeling down, because you are running on adrenalin then, when you stop, you crash down or your mind can't process life because you've lost the ability to feel contentment. 'Where is your life going'? Your mind is like your body, it needs looking after otherwise it will get strained. I teach hypnosis techniques to break free from depressed feelings and repetitive negative thoughts. Depression can be being caught up in an old feeling.

Tip - Visualise yourself climbing out of a black hole into the light. You can use your hands to pretend you are pushing yourself out of the hole. Keep repeating this in your mind until you only see yourself in the light. Then re-run events of your life in your mind as if everything has gone well. For example, if you failed to get a job see yourself getting the job. If you had an illness see yourself totally well through that time.  If you have had money worries see yourself financially stable with money in the bank back then. You are trying to re-write your past with a more positive memory to break out of low feelings.

    5) Being time short - no time for yourself, not enough time to have kids, and once you have them, not having enough time to enjoy them.  Or work pushes you, which makes you ill and then, of course, you worry about health, cancer or other illnesses. All of these things can make people drink too much alcohol which will create more of the bad feelings and wasted time. When you are time short you ironically may sleep less well.

Tip - Take back control of your time by rearranging your week. Use your weekend to refresh yourself, don't burn yourself out on a weekend over socialising or getting drunk. Have warm baths, early nights, create nurturing routines. If you have children create happy relaxed memories like sitting playing a game together rather than rushing off to the cinema. If you are lonely, finding yourself with too much time, then find ways to fill your life with purpose.

You can read more about my hypnotherapy methods for reducing stress in my book Cut the Crap and Feel Amazing (published by Hay House).

  • Can you break the cycle of drinking alcohol?

Is it time to break the cycle of drinking too much alcohol?

Daily stresses, added to the distress of dealing with life issues, can turn people to drinking more alcohol. Alcohol addictions or drinking habits build up if you use alcohol as a way of numbing the challenges in life, of which there will always be some to deal with. The secret is to find new coping strategies to deal with life, without alcohol being an escape from what is going on.

When you drink to a certain level your tolerance for alcohol becomes higher, and you don't feel drunk. You may feel fine and you might even be alright coping quite well. But there is a tipping point for everyone where you begin to drink more until your levels are unsafe or unhealthy. Alcohol can temporarily numb bad feelings, but in the end your emotions will need to be faced head-on for you to create a good life.

    Losing your tolerance

Eventually, if you carry on drinking you will begin to lose your tolerance as your body may struggle to process the alcohol. You may begin to feel the alcohol sweat in your skin, have disrupted sleep and feel sluggish. Your liver may no longer be able to deal with the burden of the alcohol. The liver is the most forgiving organ in the body if you treat it well, as it regenerates regularly but eventually even the liver has its limit. A drinker can go on to develop liver disease, a swollen spleen and other complications.

Has your drinking been creeping up over time?  Is your health progressively deteriorating? Are you struggling to see a way forward? Does a life without alcohol seem impossible? Are you more afraid of giving up drinking than you are of the health implications of drinking too much? Are you drinking to oblivion? Is your health progressively deteriorating? Has your drinking already affected your relationships?

    Alcohol and relationships

The cycle of alcohol pushes the people you love further away. You may have become some of the following:  unreliable, unreasonable, abusive, lashing out, blacking out, being embarrassing, arguing, insulting, saying things you regret later, falling over, unable to communicate or unfaithful due to drinking.

For those in relationships with a partner who has become alcohol dependent or an alcoholic, it can be a lonely, frustrating and destructive partnerships to be in. Alcohol can fuel the relationship problems then the relationship problems can fuel the drinking so you end up caught in a vicious circle. To cope with the alcohol adversity in the end alcohol becomes your companion and your partner becomes a distant friend. But the destructive relationship with alcohol can cause the drinker severe anxiety, panic attacks, and depression as well as the inability to perform at work. The endpoint to alcohol dependency can be a person sitting alone in a room with a bottle with no one left around them.

Difficult life events can leave you spiraling down

The following events can be catalysts for turning to a glass of wine, spirits or beer: a bereavement, work stress, family problems, ill-health with a family member, money stress or loneliness. But remember, these are all issues which can be resolved. People are coming through similar events all of the time. You just need to find a route through your challenges. It is good to identify what might be happening in your life that is leading you to drink too much.

A client recently had a relationship breakup as a result of their own drinking being 'out of control'. They had gone beyond hearing or caring about what they were doing to themselves and loved one. This is a story I have heard over and over again. It can leave a partner feeling trapped with the only solution being to finish with the drinker.

    Breaking habits

As a therapist helping people to break the habit of drinking, I hear the same things over and over again '  I don't want to put my girlfriend, boyfriend wife or husband through it again.' 'Alcohol crept up and just became the thing that I do'. 'The alcohol began controlling me rather than me being in control of the alcohol.'

A life without alcohol can seem impossible but there are solutions to break the habit of alcohol and deal with the problems in your life, which may be causing you to drink to excess. I teach clients to become alcohol-free with hypnosis by reprogramming their subconscious mind which holds their drinking habits and distress habits of dealing with life problems. By improving the way people think it is possible to establish new, safe and healthy habits about alcohol.

    How to become alcohol-free

I suggest you work on the subconscious level by listening to hypnosis downloads to break drinking habits or have one to one hypnosis sessions to re-program your thinking around alcohol and your life issues.

    I recommend my hypnosis recordings
    'Take control of alcohol'
    'Stop binge drinking for women'
    'Stop binge drinking for men'
Also, my hypnotherapy book 'Cut the Crap and Feel Amazing' published by Hay House has an addictions chapter to help you take back control.

  • Have you ever felt you are not good enough?

Hypnotherapy can improve your inner self-belief so that you can eliminate any fear of rejection or feelings of not being good enough, which may be holding you back

This month I am focusing on some techniques to help you overcome the fear of rejection. Whether it be in a social setting, a work interview, in a relationship or in everyday life we have all felt at least slightly awkward at some point with the feeling that we might not be good enough.

3 tips to help you feel good about yourself

    1) The feeling of 'what if I am not good enough?' probably started at an early age. So for this exercise imagine a really confident version of yourself today, then visualise yourself starting school with this confident self-belief. Imagine your school, the pupils and the teachers are smaller in your mind, then imagine going into your first day of school feeling good about yourself. See yourself going through each year of your education with a new confidence. See yourself making friends easily and being popular in the class.

    2) Re-write your history in your mind so you can overcome any past confidence knocks. Visualise things going as you would have liked them to turn out, such as see yourself getting the job, being wanted by someone you lost, being loved by a family member or being picked for the team. By seeing things going well you will override old habits of rejection which could be affecting you today.

    3) Turn the conversation with yourself into optimistic phrases such as 'What if I succeed?', 'What if I get a great job?', 'What if people like me?', 'What if I am loved?'

You can also try my new 'Release Fear of Rejection' hypnosis download recording. This will allow you to make changes whilst you relax or sleep at bedtime, to find out more click here

You can combine my 'Build Confidence and Self Esteem' hypnosis recording with my hypnotherapy book Cut the Crap and Feel AMAZING. The techniques will help you to tailor your life by cutting out the negative habits so you can feel AMAZING. Chapter 5 will boost your confidence.
